Roman Villa of Giannutri

Excursion to Giannutri, discovering the Roman Villa from the 2nd century AD.

The company "Le Crociere del Sole" organizes Guided excursions departing from Giglio Porto in the direction of Giannutri, discovering the prestigious Roman-era villa, dating back to the 2nd century A.D.. Day trips are made every Thursday from late June to early September.

The villa was built by the powerful Roman senatorial family of the Domizi Enobarbi (of whom Nero was a descendant), well-known merchants of the time also known as "silversmiths" (i.e., sellers of precious silver goods, a term from which the name of today's Argentario Promontory is derived).

In its heyday, the mansion boasted an expanse of as much as 5 hectares, including a small harbor (the port of Cala Maestra still visible when arriving by ferry), and an ingenious aqueduct to collect and distribute rainwater throughout the island. Until 2004, the archaeological site of the Villa Romana belonged to private owners, and then came under the protection of the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Toscana and under management by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.

After a long period of restoration, the villa reopened to viewers in 2015.

If you are an archaeology enthusiast and have the opportunity to be at Giglio Island on vacation, We believe that this is a truly unmissable opportunity.. The archaeological site of the Roman Villa in Giannutri has been restored to the best of its ability, and during the visit you will get a sense of the importance this structure had at the time.

The owners called it "the abode of the gods" and so it was thanks to its terrace overlooking a sea as blue and clear as few, thanks to its precious marble coverings, its baths, its elegant statues.  Then, in the summer of 2023, the famous minotaur mosaic also located in Cala Maestra was also finished being restored.

We recommend participating in this guided excursion to the Roman Villa in Giannutri, due to the fact that it is not possible to visit the site independently, but only accompanied by an official Park Guide.

Three rounds of tours are conducted each day, with a maximum number of 25 visitors per round. The guided tour lasts about 50 minutes, and once finished we will have a chance to stop at the neighboring beaches and enjoy a long break with an accompanying swim in the crystal clear waters of Giannutri.
